Missing Takoradi Girls, 2 Nigerian suspects convicted, sentenced to death

A Sekondi High Court has convicted the two accused persons behind the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the 4 Takoradi girls.

Samuel Udoetuk Wills and John Oji, both Nigerians, were facing trial in connection with the kidnapping and murder of four girls; Ruth Quayson, 18; Priscilla Blessing Bentum, 21; Priscilla Koranchie, 15; and Ruth Abekah, 18, who got missing between August 2018 and January 2019.

The victims were captured at Kansawurodo, Butumagyebu, Nkroful Junction all in Sekondi-Takoradi of the Western Region.

The fruitless search of the girls sparked a national outrage until September 2019 when the police finally discovered their bones in a septic tank in the house of the lead suspect, Samuel Udeotuk Wills. A subsequent DNA test confirmed that they were indeed the remains of the girls.

A verdict by the jury at the Sekondi High Court court today, Friday 5th March 2021, has sentenced the 2 prime suspects to death by hanging.

Both pleaded not guilty to eight counts of conspiracy and murder. They have been given 30 days within which they can appeal the sentence.

However, as of 2019, there were 180 persons on death row at Nsawam prison because Ghana hasn’t carried out dealt penalty executions since 1993. This in accordance with Amnesty International and other human rights NGO’s that have been advocating for death sentenece to be abolished.
