Nigeria’s federal government has lifted the country’s ban on Twitter activities.
This was announced today, January 12, by Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The clearance came as a consequence of a note addressed to the President by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim, Kashifu stated in a statement.
According to the statement, Twitter has agreed to the conditions set forth by the Federal government, which include establishing a legal entity in Nigeria by the first quarter of 2022, appointing a designated country representative to interface with Nigerian authorities, and complying with applicable tax obligations on its operations under Nigerian law, among other things.
On January 13th, 2022, at 12:01 a.m., the suspension will be lifted.
Nigerians have reacted positively to the news, particularly because those who wanted to use Twitter had to use a VPN to do so.
VPN, they claim, is no longer in use, implying that their phone batteries will last longer. The reactions are captured in the screenshots below.
