The World’s Second-Tallest Building Is Now Complete (PHOTOS)

Malaysia’s government has unveiled the world’s second-tallest structure.

The new Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur is set to open officially by the end of 2022, replacing the 2,073-foot (632-meter) high Shanghai Tower as the world’s second-tallest tower.

Merdeka 118, which stands 2,227 feet tall, will have an observation deck, a Park Hyatt hotel, and rentable office space when it opens.

The building, which is only second in height to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, has now reached its maximum height, and it’s a sight to behold, as photos show.

With the completion of the spire at its tip, the skyscraper stands at a staggering 2,227ft (678.9m), more than doubling the height of London’s Shard, which stands at 1,017ft (310m).

Merdeka 118, a’megatall’ skyscraper, was designed to overlook a significant historical landmark in Kuala Lumpur – Stadium Merdeka, the site of the country’s declaration of independence in 1957.

The tower’s sleek exterior was designed by the Australian firm Fender Katsalidis Architects, and it is made up of triangular glass panels inspired by shapes found in “traditional Malaysian arts and crafts.”
