Soldiers Assault Residents At Wa Over Missing Phone

Soldiers have been reported to be assaulting residents at Wa, the regional capital of the Upper West Region over a missing phone.

This has been captured in a viral video showing the gruesome beating of the people by military personnel.

Reports according to Citi Tv’s Eyewitness news says that the soldiers have been brutalizing residents asking them to produce their missing phone.

This comes barely a week after soldiers clashed with residents of Ejura which led to the death of two people with four injured and still battling for their lives. In the video below, the soldiers stopped tricycles, motorbikes and physically assaulted them.

One major collateral damage that occurred was the gruesome beating of the PRO of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, Cletus Awuni

“They hit my head about three times and my back because they used the taser on my hands and my chest,” he told Umaru Sanda of Citi Tv.

Throwing more light on his assault he recounted how he was prompted by the residents about the ongoing menace. He went in to inquire why the soldiers were being violent but ended up getting beaten as well.

Prior to that, he called the Military Commander to report the case but he claimed he didn’t know anything about that. The Military Commander then requested the PRO to hold on while he calls the second in command to inquire more on the issue. While on hold, the PRO began filming them as they continued assaulting the residents.

When the soldiers realized they were being recorded they demanded the PRO to delete the footage immediately but he refused vehemently. They tased him and beat him till one DSP of Police intervened and told them he was a PRO of the regional coordinating council.

They then stopped assaulting him and gave his phone back to him. His driver then rushed him to the hospital

The video sighted by Citi News saw some residents being forced to lie in open gutters while being beaten.

Another victim, a pupil teacher, said on Eyewitness News that he was accosted in front of his shop in town, forced to lie on the floor, and mercilessly beaten by the officers.

He said they poured hot water on him and continued to beat other persons in the town.

Back in 2016, a similar incident happened in the Northern region where a teenage boy was brutalized by a group of soldiers over a missing Tecno phone. He was beaten to a pulp and when he denied he had their phone, they threatened to shoot him.
