The official Theme Song for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Cameroon in January 2022, features Ghanaian reggae-dancehall performer Samini.
The “My Own” singer collaborated with a slew of other well-known and up-and-coming musicians from throughout Africa to develop the track that will serve as the tournament’s official theme song.
“African Smile” was written by “Collectif Africa Smile.” Prior to its release, three songs were submitted, with “AfricanSmile” getting 86.32 votes, just beating out vocalist Grace Bethel’s by 1.61 votes. With 78 votes, Gorge Samba and Taty Eyoung’s duet came in third.
Other African vocalists included in the 5-minute song include Salatiel, Timi Dakolo, Assia, Hakim, Jaylann, Rayen Youssef, Tukkiman, Imilo Iechanceux, and Mylmo.
Furthermore, the official mascot for Africa’s biggest extravaganza has been dubbed ‘Mola,’ which is a Cameroonian term for a friend or relative. The AFCON 2022 will take place on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
