Over 500k Ghanaians Are Divorced, 400k Separated – 2021 Population Census Reveals

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), 553,065 Ghanaians have had their marriages dissolved, while 405,090 have divorced.

According to new GSS data, females account for 362,233 of the 553,065 divorced people, while males account for 190,832, for a 65.5 percent and 34.5 percent share, respectively.

The majority of the nearly 400,000 spouses who divorced were females, accounting for 252,079 people; the remaining 153,011 were males.

According to the Census, there are 8,366,466 married people in Ghana, with 6,748,622 of them having not registered their marriages and only 1,617,844 having done so.

The research defines marital status as a person’s civil status as of Census Night on Sunday, June 27, 2021, when they are 12 years old or older.

It could be any of the following possibilities:

A person living together in a marital marriage but not recognized by civil or traditional law (informal/consensual union/living together).

Civil/ordinance, customary/traditional, and Islamic ceremonies, whether registered or not.

Divorced vs Separated

Separated: A person who no longer shares living quarters with his or her spouse, but whose marriage has not been formally dissolved.

Divorced: A person who has not remarried after their marriage has been annulled or dissolved in a court of law or by custom.
