Ghanaians In Spain Hold #FixTheCountry Protest On The Streets Of Madrid

Ghanaians in Spain have organized the first “Fix The Country” campaign on the streets of Madrid.

The Spanish based Ghanaians inscribed words and phrases of protests on placards to match on the streets of Madrid declaring their support for the “Fix the Country” movement.

They also called out the Ghana Embassy in Spain, following the inhumane treatment rendered to them in the country.

This comes after several weeks of ardent and committed online protests by the youth on social media.

The fix the country protests is an initiative by the youth in Ghana with the sole aim of protesting against bad governance in the country. Recent price fluctuations and high cost of living have all accounted for the introduction of this online advocacy.

Twitter posts of photos of the Ghanaians protesting in Madrid have since been catching attention on the microblogging platform.

In the same fate, supporters of the protest in Ghana have scheduled July 3rd, 2021 to go on a demonstration too.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police has been quashing the street protest in Accra citing COVID-19 related issues and the restrictions on public gatherings. This was initially taken to the Accra High Court where the case was ruled in favour of the police on May 6th 2021 but the proponents of the protest then sent an appeal to the Supreme Court which they won.

The Ghana Police, unhappy with the results has also appealed the ruling of the Supreme court as the security apparatus continues to warn the protestors not to hit the street unlawfully. This time, the case was taken to the Criminal Court 1 of the Accra High Court.

At the hearing attended by Efia Odo among other convenors of the Fix The Country protest, the court, however, has scheduled the hearing for Monday, June 21st after the State attorney of the Ghana Police delayed in filing their affidavit.

The State Attorney appealed to the judge, Ruby Aryeetey, to grant them time to file an official affidavit against their opposition. Accordingly, the judge granted the plea and has adjourned the case to June 21st.
