Efia Odo Speaks After Her Arrest And Bail Of #FixTheCountry Protestors

Efia Odo was arrested today with about 11 other #FixTheCountry campaigners at the Accra High Court.

The actress with the others arrested has been granted self-recognizance bail after the Accra Region Police interrogated them for close to three hours on why they allegedly assembled at the court.

The protestors were picked up into police pick up vehicles from the premises of the Accra High Court to the Accra Region Police HQ.

During their arrest interrogation, some members of the #FixTheCountry campaign with their lawyers stormed the police station demanding the immediate release of the protestors.

Most of the #FixTheCountry campaigners took to social media to argue that the arrest was unlawful whilst a  #FreeEfiaOdo campaign was also launched on Twitter with the likes Kwesi Arthur, Efya Nokturnal among others who amplified it.

The lawyers after several hours of meeting with the Accra Region police head of legal and prosecution plus the crime officer managed to secure the bail for the protestors.

The lawyers say the bail was without conditions and the police also failed to prescribe specific charges against their clients. The Police have, however, remained tight-lipped on the exact reason for the arrest.

Efia Odo who spoke after their release said, “the judge called for a recess, and I was taking pictures with some of the conveners who had come there to show their support. Then, all of a sudden, the police comes in with their guns as if we are criminals and aggressively took us in”.

“They never told us the reason for the arrest. They told us to write our statement and I compiled”, she added in the video below.. The 12 are expected to report to the police on Monday for further investigations.

Meanwhile, in the ruling today after the arrest, the Accra High Court has dismissed an injunction application by the Ghana Police Service seeking to restrain a street protest by #FixTheCountry campaigners.

Myjoyonline reports that the court said the application is moot because, May 9, the date for the protest, which the police did not agree to, has long elapsed.

In the last few months, the #FixTheCountry campaigners have agitated on social media demanding that the government addresses challenges that, have for years, bedevilled the nation.

A plan to hit the streets to protest in this regard has, however, been met with stiff resistance from the Police Service with support from the Attorney General.

On Friday, Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame urged the court to place an injunction on the group in order to prevent them from protesting till Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.
